As a known fact that children’s are full of energy and they love to express it through some or the other form of art. They don’t mind getting dirty while playing in the mud or draw something or paint on the wall. Pottery, perhaps clay is the only medium where you don’t have to follow any rules and still express yourself. Hence as a material it has a mesmerizing impact on children.

In our pottery workshop, we do not have any fixed pattern. It’s sheer fun to see how the children develop an eye and hand co-ordination and motor skills. It’s the playfulness that gives them complete freedom to accomplish the goals they set for themselves. They learn to create something and enjoy the end result of their own work. This boosts their self-confidence and brings a sense of belonging in them. In this process they imbibe to do things independently and learn to respect the work.

There are simple guidelines to be followed while attending the workshop related to safety and health. Having said that there can be negative consequences if one does not follow them during the workshop.

The workshop begins with an introductory session of pottery and ceramics. It gives a brief idea of how clay reacts to the techniques and processes used in the workshop.  It also touches upon the topics like perceived value of ceramic, how pottery changes when the different glazes, treatments and technique are applied.

The next stage allows children to knead, pinch and roll the clay with their hands. This is the most interesting part of the entire workshop that permits children to play with clay while learning. So after completing their task they explore their creative ideas. The best part of this activity is they enjoy their creativity even if the output is different from their initial ideas. This lets them conquer the fear of failure. Even if the child is anxious or having attention issues, clay has the healing and calming capacity to pacify their anxiety just by helping them to concentrate on the task they have been working on.

As we go along, children are allowed to bake and glaze their art pieces under the supervision of our senior potters. Even if they don’t bake or glaze their work, it’s a great idea to take it home along with a bag full of clay to practice.

However on completion of the workshop, children learn to communicate through a clay storey that resembles a beautiful sculptural pieces of clay. Finally they leave, only to carry back a next storey in their eyes and heart with an unforgettable smile on their faces.
